Foundation Talk: Covid-19 and scientific research

In 2020-2021 the Biomedical University Foundation inaugurated a series of Foundation Talks webinars to provide an in-depth exploration of the Covid-19 pandemic from a scientific, medical, welfare and social point of view, through the voice and involvement of experts in various disciplines.

Speaker:

Massimo Ciccozzi

Molecular Epidemiologist, Head of Medical Statistics and Molecular Epidemiology Unit, UCBM, Rome

Fiorella Gurrieri

Full Professor of Medical Genetics, UCBM, Rome

Marcello D'Amelio

Goals and Impact

The study aims to evaluate the impact of the individual genetic profile on the clinical characteristics and progression of COVID-19. This study will lead to the identification of genetic variants of susceptibility and / or protection against the disease. This will make it possible to insert these variants into an engineered cell model and to mimic COVID-19 infection in vitro. The impact of this model is not limited to a better understanding of the disease’s pathogenesis, but it will extend to the possibility of rapidly testing new drugs.
