New knowledge of the genetic components of complex diseases and rare diseases

The Medical Genetics Lab of Campus Bio-Medico University aims to carry out a research activity with the main purpose of acquiring new knowledge on the genetic and epigenetic basis of disability in three specific contexts: physical disability (neurological or orthopedic movement impediments, vision or hearing disorders), mental disability (language issues, cognitive delays, genetic syndromes), social disability (Autism spectrum, Asperger’s syndrome, bipolar disorders or other psychiatric diseases).

The Genetics Unit’s purpose also includes the functional analysis of the identified genetic variants, disease modeling and the therapy research to be tested on various disease models. Furthermore, thanks to a close collaboration with other disciplines such as bioengineering and bioinformatics, the research activity is aimed at identifying genetic profiles of susceptibility to diseases and at developing predictive models with the application of artificial intelligence.
